Poplar River First Nation – Wastewater Treatment Lagoon Expansion
Client: Poplar River First Nation
Location: Poplar River First Nation, Manitoba, Canada
Poplar River First Nation’s wastewater lagoon had exceeded its treatment capacity, creating compliance challenges and limiting future growth. The community needed an upgrade that could deliver long term reliability within a constrained site. The project added new primary and secondary cells, converted the existing primary cell to expand secondary treatment, and installed all required interconnecting piping.
Because the lagoon is located near the aerodrome, a specialized waterfowl deterrent system was incorporated to help maintain aviation safety. A continuous alum dosing system, housed in a new chemical building, now injects alum directly into the sewage forcemain to reduce nutrient loading and improve effluent quality. The upgraded system provides capacity for twenty years of population growth, strengthens regulatory compliance, and delivers a resilient, low maintenance wastewater solution tailored to northern community needs.
