Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation – Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Client: Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation
Location: Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, Manitoba, Canada
JRCC was retained to provide engineering services for the NCN water treatment plant upgrade. The community’s water and wastewater system was operating at capacity and future planned developments would be a further stress on the system. There were also concerns with water quality and the potential for contamination of the water source from the existing sewage lift station.
To address the needs of the community JRCC designed a new raw water intake further north of the lift station, a new water treatment plant with a 1,300 m3 reservoir, remote truckfill building, two wastewater lift stations, and the installation of 3,960 m of watermain, 2,060 m of forcemain, and 1,240 m of gravity sewermain.
The water treatment involves three conventional treatment coagulation/ flocculation/ clarification/ filtration units, followed by UV disinfection and chlorine injection. The plant is equipped with five distribution pumps and a jockey pump, capable of providing fire flows of 63 L/s to the community. Backup power was provided with an onsite genset. The intake was installed 250 m into Footprint Lake. Two water crossings are required for the installation of the watermain and forcemain piping to service the east portion of the community where a new subdivision is located.
The decommissioning and demolition of the existing water treatment plant was completed once the community transitioned to the new water system.
